HUNTING

Here at Manahune Station, we offer opportunities to hunt for wild fallow deer and wallabies. You can navigate the hills to find animals to harvest on your own, or Ryan can guide you.

Guided or unguided hunts

What suits you and your skill level?

Unguided hunts are a great way to fill your freezer if you have the gear, experience and vehicle/fitness level to do so. We prefer that hunters use a quadbike or side-by-side to navigate farm tracks, but other 4WD vehicles can be used on tracks if the conditions allow.

Guided hunts are a great opportunity for people that are new to hunting to get out with Ryan, learn about finding animals, about some of the useful gear and equipment for hunting, and how to ethically harvest your kills. Ryan will drive you around, and can provide gun and ammunition if needed.

Weapons are NOT available for hire.

Hunt at Manahune

We charge a daily hunting fee per person: this is for all members of the party that are 13 years old or older. This fee covers a 24 hour period - shoot as many wallabies or other small pest species as you like.

Meat animals (fallow deer) and cull or trophy fallow bucks are charged per animal.

Fallow deer

Wild fallow deer have been present on this farm for a long time. We think their meat is the best protein you'll find!

You're bound to leave with meat to fill your freezer, and on top of harvesting meat, there's also opportunities to hunt for bucks. The heads (antlers) don't traditionally show a lot of palm on this range of hills, but through careful management (while still trying to reduce the wild deer population), we're starting to see some better heads.

Wallabies

Bennett's wallabies were released on the local range many years ago. Wallabies are a pest species that breed prolifically and (unfortunately) thrive in South Canterbury. We've shot >1000 wallabies per year from our property alone in past years, and are on track to shoot another 1000+ this year (2024). Any bit of help to keep the population to a minimum is appreciated. Night shooting with a spotlight or thermal scope is most effective for wallaby hunting.
